Persimmon-Shaped Case of Colorful Lacquer with the Pattern of Bats
——Made During the Period of Emperor Yongzheng in Qing Dynasty
|
The case is persimmon-shaped. Red lacquer covers its whole body, filled by colorful lacquer with the patterns of bats in gold threads, as well as the patterns of lotus. The implied meaning is health, long life and good luck. The foot decoration is the pattern of creeping weeds. Black lacquer covers its bottom, and the pedicel of persimmon and the pattern of persimmon leaves are painted colorful in the middle. The case was made by the palace workshops in the eleventh year of Emperor Yongzheng’s reign in Qing Dynasty.

Happiness and longevity is a folk theme which is widely known by Chinese people, to express people’s best wished for better life, and it is also a common theme for the works of craft art.
This hanging panel uses traditional lacquer inlaid skills, and uses various natural soft and hard jade and stone to carve the eighteen disciples of the Buddha, located inside the two Chinese characters which means happiness and longevity, they are wandering among hills, stone and pine forest, with natural and elegant postures. There are five Chinese characters showing the work is made by the emperor order to praise the disciples of the Buddha, the characters are very clear and elegant. The patterns at the edge of its frame are finished through mother-of-pearl inlaid craft.

Eight Lucky Case for Silver Ingot with Gold Lacquer and Red Carve Inlay, has the style of royal palace, with unique structure, delicate and beautiful design, rich and magnificent. Inlaid craft is used in the surface of the case, and use natural ivory and sea-ear shell on the regulate surface to inlay mother-of-pearl eight treasures lucky patterns, delicate and exquisite. There are a great number of craft products in Ming and Qing Dynasties, showing the advantages of Beijing carving and filling craft. On the surface of initial material with perfect lacquer, use natural cashew lacquer to prepare various mineral substance pigments to paint various colorful paintings, and then use a plastic cutter to carve lacquer, and fill colorful lacquer, and the filling of lacquer should be flat, the color is rich and bright, the knife edge is fine and exquisite, and the operation should be skillful and fluent, to form classical, elegant, beautiful and gorgeous royal artistic style.

At the sixteenth year of Qianlong period (1751AD), Emperor Qianlong, whose manchu name is Hongli, finally determined the Eight Great Sights of Yanjing: Autumn Winds on Taiye, Jade Islet in Shady Springtime, The Golden Terrace in the Glow of the Setting Sun, Trees Enveloped in Mint at the Ancient City of Jizhou, the Sunny Western Hills after Snow, The Rainbow Floating over the Jade Spring, The Moon over the Lugou Bridge at Dawn, The Great Wall Surrounded by Lush Greenery at the Juyong Pass. Gold Inlaid Lacquer is one of the Eight Palace Handcrafts of Beijing. The lacquer tray for exhibition is exquisitely made with craft of “polished mother-of-pearl” — an important category of “Gold Inlaid and painted decoration artistry” which belongs to the national intangible cultural heritage.
